Douyin and iQIYI Agree to Content Licensing Cooperation

On July 19, Baidu-backed video streaming platform iQIYI and ByteDance’s short video app Douyin announced a new cooperation, under which the two sides will jointly explore secondary creation and the promotion of long video content.

According to the deal, iQIYI will authorize long video content with information network dissemination rights and sub-authorization in its content assets to Douyin for short video creation. The two sides have reached detailed agreements on the derivative work forms of short videos, such as commentary, mixed cutting and strip splitting, and will jointly promote the standardized use of intellectual property rights to long video content.

In the future, users of Douyin, Xigua Video, Toutiao and other platforms under Douyin Group can re-create many authorized works, including “LIGHT ON.”

Gong Yu, the founder and CEO of iQIYI, considers the cooperation as an important step for both parties to respect and protect intellectual property rights and explore win-win cooperation. It is believed that the deal will help optimize the ecology of the online video industry, broaden cooperation channels, create more value, and achieve a win-win situation for the platform, creators and users.

Kelly Zhang, CEO of Douyin Group, said that film and television creators are an important part of Douyin’s content ecology. Both parties will attempt to provide better solutions for the industry.

On March 17 this year, Douyin announced a cooperation with Sohu.com, obtaining its authorization to create nearly all its own film and television works and variety shows, including works such as Medical Examiner Dr. Qin, Fleet of Time and Mysterous Love. The Douyin platform and its users can now edit, arrange or adapt these film and television works within a five-minute time frame.
