OnePlus 9R Launches in China with Snapdragon 870, 120Hz Display

Chinese smartphone maker OnePlus on Thursday unveiled the OnePlus 9R, the third and most affordable option in the company’s flagship OnePlus 9 series.

The new OnePlus 9R is comparable to last year’s OnePlus 8T, but is billed by the company as a high-performing, gamer-friendly phone with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset. The phone features a 6.55-inch Fluid AMOLED display with a 1080 x 2400 pixel resolution and a 20:9 aspect ratio. It also sports an excellent 120Hz refresh rate for vivid and clear visuals.

The device’s quad-camera setup houses a 48-megapixel main sensor, a 16-megapixel ultrawide lens, a 5-megapixel macro lens and a 2-megapixel depth sensor. It also has a 16-megapixel camera at the front for selfies and video chats.

The OnePlus 9R packs a 4,500 mAh battery that supports 65W fast charging, which can provide a full charge in 39 minutes, according to the company.

Prior to the release of the phone, OnePlus announced popular fictional superhero Ultraman Tiga as the official brand ambassador for OnePlus 9R.

The rest of the line-up — the OnePlus 9 and the OnePlus 9 Pro — are powered by the Snapdragon 888 chipset and went on sale in China in late March. The two models feature a new flagship camera system from a three-year partnership with professional camera manufacturer Hasselblad. However, there is no Hasselblad branding on the camera of the OnePlus 9R.

All three phones run Android 11 customized by OxygenOS in the global market, while in China they run Oppo’s ColorOS after switching from Hydrogen OS.

Prices for the OnePlus 9R start at 2,999 yuan ($460) for the 8GB + 128GB variant and 3,299 yuan ($505) for the 12GB + 256GB variant. The phone, available in black and light blue, will go on sale in China on April 20.
