Tesla Lays the Roof of Its Model Y Production Facility in Shanghai

American EV-maker Tesla’s plant in Shanghai, China, restarted production and delivery of Model 3 cars in early 2020. According to the latest news, Tesla is currently building the second phase of its Shanghai plant, which seems to be in the roof laying stage. Previously, Tesla announced that from 2021, it will also start production of the company’s other car, the Model Y, in China.

Tesla has kept information about the construction of the new section of its plant under wraps. One Tesla fan used a drone to check on the progress of the construction process. The video shows that the Model Y workshop is now laying the roof. Many roof materials can be seen in the aerial picture.

According to media reports, the size of the Model Y workshop is even larger than that of the Model 3 facility built last year.

At present, it is still unknown when construction will be finished. In the best case scenario, the Model Y may be put into production by the end of 2020, allowing Tesla to deliver the Made-in-China Model Y at the beginning of next year.

Recently, Tesla reduced the price of the China-made Model 3 car in order to qualify for subsidies provided by the Chinese government to long-range EVs priced under 300,000 yuan. After the government subsidies the price for the car dropped even lower, to roughly 270,000 yuan ($37,900), which has been seen as a threat to Tesla’s Chinese competitors whose main advantage had been low prices.
