Tencent’s QQ Adds Instagram-like Content Sharing Function Targeting Young Users

On April 10, Tencent’s social media platform QQ launched a new feature called “Small World” for the Android 8.3.3 version of the app. The Instagram-style content community targets young users by allowing them to post visual content in a specialized feed.

WeChat media account Tech Planet learned from a person close to QQ that “Small World” was established at the beginning of 2020 and was first supposed to be called “WeZone.”

The video-dominated “Small World” looks similar to WeChat’s recently added short video sharing function “Channels.” Unlike WeChat, QQ also allows pictures, lowering the threshold for content creation and encouraging young users to participate.

According to Tencent‘s latest financial report, the number of monthly active users on QQ in the fourth quarter of 2019 reached 647 million, down 7.5% year-on-year and 1% quarter-on-quarter. Tencent’s first social media product that managed to survive from the PC era is gradually losing ground to its younger sibling WeChat.
