Tencent Responds to Heated Discussion on WeChat Server Collapse

On Monday morning, some Chinese netizens expressed frustration online about the failure of WeChat’s picture and file transfer function, causing “WeChat collapses” to become a trending topic on Weibo.

Many web users complained that the WeChat app on some smartphones and PCs failed to send pictures in the morning, and that when the sender finally sent it, the recipient couldn’t see the pictures. Some recipients could see thumbnails, but were unable to click on the original pictures.

Then, netizens posted on social media, with one saying, “what happened is that WeChat pictures can’t be opened, or they are very slow.” Some netizens’ pictures said, “I thought my colleague sent the virus.”

In response, the official account named ‘@TencentWeChatTeam’ responded on Weibo: “Just now, the function of sending pictures and files on WeChat failed, and affected some users. We are now restoring the function. We are sorry for the inconvenience to you.”

Later, at 11:55 a.m., WeChat announced the completion of the repair.

Previously, Tencent released its financial report for the second quarter of 2021 on August 18. In terms of user data, as of June 30, 2021, the total monthly active users of Weixin (WeChat in China) and WeChat were 1.251 billion, up 3.8% year-on-year and 0.8% quarter-on-quarter.

The Q2 financial report says that the larger number of active users and their higher involvement in WeChat highlights the prosperous development of WeChat’s service and business ecology.

In addition, during the reporting period, Tencent achieved revenue of 138.259 billion yuan ($21.496 billion), up 20% year-on-year, and net profit attributable to shareholders was 42.587 billion yuan, up 29% year-on-year.
