Tencent Releases First Annual Sustainable Social Value Report

Chinese internet technology company Tencent released its Sustainable Social Value Report 2021 on Monday. With the theme of “Creating Common Benefits,” the report systematically discloses the company’s explorations and practices regarding sustainable social value innovation in the past year.

The report claims that in terms of employment, the firm’s WeChat ecology generated 36.84 million employment opportunities in 2020, an increase of 24.4% year-on-year.

In the field of industrial internet, Tencent has jointly created more than 400 industry solutions with more than 9,000 partners across more than 30 industries.

In the field of first aid, in September 2021, the Red Cross Society of China and Tencent reached a cooperation to jointly build a first aid public service system which is named “Jijiubao.”

The report also shows that in the past year, Tencent Public Welfare upgraded its platform and received active participation and positive feedback from users and charities. On “99 Giving Day” in 2021, users donated a total of 3.569 billion yuan ($526 million) to a total of 68.7 million people, which led more than 12,000 enterprises to participate.

Specifically, on September 5, the company launched its “Charity Day” with the theme of common prosperity. A total of 4.73 million people donated 270 million yuan, and together with 160 million donations from Tencent Foundation, a total of 430 million donations were used for post-disaster reconstruction, rural revitalization, aiding the vulnerable and other projects to promote a better shared future, focusing on many underdeveloped areas such as the central and western regions and mountainous rural areas across China.

Pony Ma, Chairman and CEO of Tencent, pointed out in the report: “At the moment, Tencent is facing a new stage in which challenges and development coexist. We believe that we can shift gears to create higher quality development. That is, to focus more on the center of user value, technological innovation and social responsibility, and stick to the vision of science and technology for good.”

Since its establishment in 1998, Tencent has released nine corporate social responsibility reports. This year, it upgraded and released the sustainable social value report for the first time, which is also the first complete annual transcript since Tencent announced its strategy of “sustainable social value innovation.”
