Tencent Games Announces Strategic Cooperation with Qualcomm

Qualcomm and Tencent Games announced on July 29 that they will cooperate on projects that could include optimizing the Chinese tech giant’s video games for devices with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Elite gaming chips, and creating a 5G version of a Tencent-backed gaming phone.

The cooperation will include development of augmented reality and virtual reality technologies, the American chipmaker said in a statement.

Tencent has been working closely with Qualcomm for many years and just earlier this month, the company teamed up with Taiwan-based computer company ASUS’ gaming device division, Republic of Gamers, to introduce the ROG 2, a gaming phone with a Qualcomm chip.

Tencent and Qualcomm also plan to jointly develop a 5G version of the gaming phone, which could help boost Tencent’s plans for a game-streaming service. The company is currently working on a cloud-based back-end service called Instant Play that game developers could use to stream games.

“With 5G, mobile games will be able to take advantage of next-generation connectivity technology very quickly. Faster speeds, higher bandwidth and ultra-low latency will enable an instant immersive gaming experience. We hope to enrich the lives of consumers around the world and transform the gaming landscape through this new strategic partnership with Tencent,” said Meng Pu, chairman of Qualcomm China.
