China’s smartphone maker OPPO said Tuesday it helped deploy the UK’s first 5G Standalone (SA) network and offered network slicing services in collaboration with Vodafone and Ericsson.
Built in the UK’s Coventry University, the new network was verified by OPPO’s 5G smartphones, the Find X2 Pro and Reno3, powered by Qualcomm Technologies and MediaTek’s 5G mobile platforms, respectively.

OPPO said it co-developed network slice switching software solutions with Qualcomm Technologies, allowing users to switch between two slices for different needs.
One network slice satisfies high-speed access to the Internet, the company said, while the other serves campuses for school resources sharing as well as low latency, high-definition and remote courses.
The 5G SA and network slicing technologies are the latest achievements of OPPO’s 5G development.
SA refers to an independent network using 5G base stations and core networks, which is a trend for future 5G development.
The 5G network slicing technology, applied to the 5G core network, divides the network into multiple end-to-end networks. Each sliced network has independent resources.
OPPO said it has partnered with more than 40 major carriers in Europe in its endeavor to advance 5G technology.
