OnePlus Celebrates Making World’s First 5G Tweet

On Friday, Chinese smartphone manufacturer OnePlus celebrated the success of making the world’s first 5G tweet, according to a Twitter post by Pete Lau, the company’s founder and CEO.

“We started by connecting a prototype device to a 5G Non-standalone Network, via an lte b7 + n78 air interface,” OnePlus explained through its community announcement. “Once the device had been registered, we began a 5G data call and made the IP layer work. And once that was done, we sent out the tweet.”

OnePlus may be well on its way to releasing the world’s first working 5G smartphone, as indicated by Carl Pei, the company’s co-founder on October 22 during a summit with Qualcomm’s president, Cristiano Amon.

The research on 5G technology began as early as 2016 for OnePlus when the company established a special project team with the goal of making OnePlus a leader among 5G smartphone manufacturers.

In 2017, Qualcomm’s R&D Team officially joined the company’s research efforts. Together, the two companies made significant strides in improving 5G hardware and the network architecture that supports it.

In August of 2018, the OnePlus 5G Project Team successfully established a 5G connection to Qualcomm’s laboratory located in San Diego, the United States. It marked a huge step forward in 5G efforts throughout the industry.

Many are speculating and expecting the 5G technology to be ready by 2019 and available for the OnePlus 7, which is due to release around June the same year.
