The 9X devices feature colorful models with an X-shaped gradient effect on the back. Honor finally ditched the ancient micro-USB port the Honor 8X had, and upgraded to the standard Type-C port. However, just like its predecessor, both the 9X and the 9X Pro come with headphone jacks. The handsets also come with large 6.6-inch LCD displays. The lack of bezels and notch makes for a clean and uncluttered feel.

Both phones feature an octa-core Kirin 810 chipset, which is built on 7nm process technology and was first seen on the Huawei Nova 5. The Kirin 810 can be compared to Snapdragon 730, Qualcomm’s third most powerful chipset, making it clear that this is a mid-range phone. Honor claimed the phone is targeted towards the young middle-class which is steadily growing in China.

The main feature that sets the two phones apart is the camera setup. The 9X Pro has a triple cameras with a 48MP main sensor, 8MP wide-angle lens, and 2MP depth sensor, while the non-pro version features a dual 48MP+2MP camera. The 9X Pro also added a liquid cooling system to avoid the phone from heating up during intense gaming sessions. The 4000mAh battery ensures one night’s charge can last you throughout the day even if you end up watching the entire Lord of the Rings franchise in one go.

Following the U.S. government’s ban on Huawei, it has been unclear where the 9X series will be released apart from the Chinese home market. Although not being very specific, Honor president George Zhao puts us at ease. “The Honor 9X series continues to demonstrate Honor’s commitment in delivering unrivaled products with unbeatable value. We will soon introduce the latest X-series globally. Stay tuned!” Zhao said.
