Gamers Worldwide Spend Nearly $2.7B on Genshin Impact

According to a report released by data analysis provider data.ai on Wednesday, Genshin Impact, an open-world RPG owned by Chinese video game developer miHoYo, has approached nearly $2.7 billion in global users since its launch in September 2020.

The game has proven popular in many parts of the world while its biggest markets with the largest player spending are found in China, the United States, Japan, South Korea, and Germany.

At first, Genshin Impact received very little fanfare when it was released. But over the 18 months since its debut, its mobile version was downloaded 115 million times in the iOS App Store and Google Play in 174 countries.

The report pointed out that the game has an even more impressive record of inducing players to spend money. With its free large-scale role-playing gameplay, the attractive “gacha” gameplay (that is, players can consume money in the game to obtain rare characters and virtual items) has been a lucrative success. With the help of this model, the game has become the second-ranked game in iOS and Google Play user spending in 2021 and took first place in the first quarter of 2022.

Genshin Impact is a mobile RPG, and its target players are younger gamers. According to data.ai, players of Generation Z (those under 24 years of age) are about twice as likely to play Genshin Impact compared with the average population. In Germany, Japan, France and Britain, the proportion of Generation Z has nearly tripled.

Genshin Impact is known for its detailed and colorful animations while allowing users to choose between male and female protagonists. These two points may explain why it has become so attractive to the younger generation and both male and female gamers. Further, in order to attract target users, the mobile advertisements for Genshin Impact emphasize the ease of its operation and long-term playability.
