ByteDance Initiates Testing of First Music App

The first music app operated by Beijing-based tech giant ByteDance, named “Soda Music,” has now begun small-scale testing, according to a report Monday by Xinyan Finance.

The player interface of Soda Music is similar to the design of Douyin, the Chinese mainland version of TikTok. The music album cover is displayed in the middle of the screen, while main features such as the song name, artist, likes, comments and a sharing button are displayed from top to bottom in the lower left-hand corner. In the released player interface, there are none of the standard functions seen on common music streaming apps such as “back,” “forward” and “pause.” It seems that user operation of the app will be based on sliding and touching, as on Douyin and TikTok.

At present, the content library of Soda Music focuses on niche music, which can bring a unique experience to its users through ByteDance’s AI recommendation feature. In addition, Soda Music will focus on recommending only singles, not albums or playlists.

Regarding user content authorization, Soda Music has launched a membership feature during this testing stage. The app, like similar music products, is expected to focus on member subscription and digital albums as its main revenue sources.

In December, 2021, ByteDance reportedly launched an internal test of the app. The name of this product was not “Feile,” but “Soda Music,” and development of the product was completed around September last year. Soda Music is positioned as a music streaming platform for young people who love to follow music trends.

Soda Music recently completed software copyright registration. According to public information, the development of Soda Music was completed on February 14, 2022, and the copyright belongs to Beijing Microlive Vision Technology Co., Ltd., which is also the main operator of Douyin.

In addition, a few options for the Soda Music logo have been finalized. Currently, there are two designs, with bubbles and music serving as the main elements. One of them will be selected as the logo when the product is officially released.
