TechBuzz China by Pandaily is a weekly technology podcast that is all about China’s innovations. It is co-hosted by Ying-Ying Lu and Rui Ma who are both seasoned China watchers with years of experience working in the technology space in China. They share and discuss the most important tech news from China every week with commentaries from investors, industry experts and entrepreneurs. The podcast is powered by, a news media company with a mission is to deliver premium content with contextual insights on China’s innovation, business, and culture to communities worldwide.

Our new partner SupChina is an independent digital media company that informs and entertains a global audience of influencers and leaders with smart, accessible content, helping them make sense of a complex country that is reshaping the world.

This week on TechBuzz China, our hosts tackle two ambitious stories. First, Rui talks about the seven-year ban the U.S. government announced on sales of American components to Chinese telecom equipment and systems company ZTE, and the overwhelming response from Chinese tech media, which has called the ban a “very rude awakening.” China has earmarked billions of dollars for semiconductor R&D and investment, but what impact do these funds have? What is going wrong, and what does this all mean for China’s place on the global tech stage?

Ying-Ying covers responses to the report released by Human Rights Watch about sexist hiring practices in China’s tech sector. The Western media response lies in stark contrast to domestic reactions from within China, and our hosts speculate as to why that is. Given that hiring is only one aspect of gender equality, what does this story say about the current state of gender norms in China’s tech industry and how easily things will change? Why is this significant for the future of China tech, and important for our listeners outside of China?

Previous topics covered on TechBuzz China include our first episode on Toutiao’s apology and Mobike’s acquisition by Meituan-Dianping and our second episode on the rise of social commerce and the future of co-working in China which you can listen to here on, or on SoundCloud, iTunes, Ximalaya, or wherever you podcast from.
