Alibaba recently released its 2017 data related to social responsibility. During 2017, Alibaba paid more than 100 million yuan per day in taxes, drove more than 290 billion yuan in tax payments through upstream and downstream companies and created 33 million jobs.
The taxes paid by Alibaba were mainly composed of two parts. One part was tax paid by upstream manufacturing industries due to common efforts made by Tmall and Taobao, which was about 260 billion yuan. The other part was tax from the downstream delivery industry, which was about 30 billion yuan.
Poverty alleviation has become part of Alibaba‘s strategic business. In 2017, Alibaba set up a poverty alleviation fund, planned to invest 10 billion yuan in next five years and explored the new model of Internet and poverty alleviation.
Alibaba has incubated 2,118 Taobao villages, nearly 400 of which are located in provincial poverty-stricken counties. And 33 of which are located in 13 national poverty-stricken counties.
In 2017, Alibaba‘s poverty-alleviation and farmer-assistance channels connected with 120 poverty-stricken counties in 13 provinces. The agricultural products of each national poverty-stricken county were sold to 270 cities, covering most cities in China.
Meanwhile, Alibaba continues to invest in public service.
Alibaba said each employee needed to complete at least three hours of public service every year, and launched its 95 Charity Week in 2017, promoting the three-hour platform and concept to society. In the 2018 fiscal year (from April 1, 2017 to January 17, 2018), Alibaba employees spent more than 100,000 hours on public welfare activities. In 2017, Alibaba‘s 12 female partners set up Hupan Modou Foundation, committed to helping children and women in distress.
Public welfare is integrated into the business model of Alibaba‘s platform. In 2017, 1.78 million merchants and 350 million buyers participated in the Charity for Children Plan. Raising 246 million yuan to help the 2.97 million vulnerable people.
Since 2010, in order to fulfill its corporate social responsibility, Alibaba established a long-term public welfare fund and committed to investing 0.3 percent of its annual income in the fund. The year of 2017 is its eighth consecutive year.
In addition to fulfilling social responsibilities in employment, public welfare and poverty alleviation, Alibaba has also increased its investment in frontier technologies through projects. Such as Alibaba DAMO Academy (the Academy for Discovery, Adventure, Momentum and Outlook).
Last year, Alibaba formally announced the establishment of the DAMO Academy. Its an entity organization bearing the “NASA plan”, to conduct research on basic science and disruptive technology innovation. Over the next three years, Alibaba will spend more than 100 billion yuan on technology research and development.
On the company’s 18th anniversary, Alibaba chairman Jack Ma said social responsibility is what separates Alibaba from ordinary enterprises. “Alibaba must have social responsibility and care for the country and the world. The role Alibaba plays in dealing with social problems will define how big of an enterprise Alibaba can become,” he said.
