More than 40 Brands and 100M Devices to Join HarmonyOS 2.0 Beta in 2021: Huawei Estimates
Leading smartphone manufacturer Huawei disclosed that by 2021, more than 40 mainstream brands and 100 million devices will provide new application scenarios for the HarmonyOS system, according to Haisong Yang, vice president of Huawei consumer businesses software department, at the HarmonyOS 2.0 Beta for Developers event which kicked off in Shanghai on Dec. 30.
Previously, on Dec. 16, Huawei officially launched the HarmonyOS 2.0 Beta for developers, giving them full access to the debut smartphone operating system version, including application programming interface, distributed application display and UI framework, and various development tools such as the DevEco Studio. The beta version stands out as the first among all the HarmonyOS versions to open up for app developers prior to the public. Meanwhile, the inaugural HarmonyOS developer innovative competition was launched in Beijing, attracting more than 1,800 teams.
“Two weeks after the HarmonyOS 2.0 beta was launched for smartphone app developers, a cohort of mobile application developers have joined us,” Yang said during his speech. “We look forward to working with more developers and partners to jointly pioneer the next decade of the mobile industry.”
In his speech, Yang also pointed out that the rapid development of the Internet of Things (IoT) offers the mobile industry historic opportunities in the upcoming decade. He mentioned that HarmonyOS exists as one of the keys to IoT, as it opens up more application scenarios for IoT as well as brings more traffic entrances to app developers.
At the event in Shanghai, developers of companies from a variety of industries shared their innovative experience based on HarmonyOS, including office software provider WPS, video sharing platform Bilibili, online travel agency (OTA) giant Trip.com, voice recognition software manufacturer iFlytek and others.
Since the release of HarmonyOS in 2019, the operating system has completed the upgrade from version 1.0 to 2.0 in just one year.
On Sep. 10 this year, when HarmonyOS 2.0 became open-source, more than 2 million people accessed the open-source code. The OpenHarmony project has become one of the most popular open source projects in China.

On Nov. 11, the first batch of home products equipped with HarmonyOS from Midea, a Chinese electrical appliance manufacturer, debuted on the market. At present, more than 20 hardware manufacturers have participated in the construction of HarmonyOS ecology.
