The press release from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine shows that Xiaomi was included in the list of international sponsors for war due to the fact that, after Russia’s “full invasion”, the company not only continued to operate within Russia but also became a leading brand for smartphone sales in this “terrorist state”.
The National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine stated that according to data from the third quarter of 2022, compared with the previous quarter, Xiaomi‘s supply volume to Russia increased by 39%.
As a result, in 2022, Xiaomi‘s market share in Russia doubled, making it the leading brand for smartphone sales in Russia.
According to official data, in 2021, Xiaomi‘s Russian subsidiary had a revenue of $ 202 million USD. This is a huge amount of money that requires paying a large amount of taxes. The Ukrainian Anti-Corruption Bureau claims that these taxes were used to support the Russian military and “launch a war against Ukraine”.
The Ukrainian side believes that Xiaomi has sponsored military aggression by terrorist countries and will bear the reputation and legal consequences of its actions. Currently, the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine has listed 21 companies as international sponsors of war.
In response to this, Xiaomi issued a statement:
Xiaomi Corporation is a global company founded in Beijing that provides high-quality consumer smartphones and home appliances to consumers worldwide. We firmly believe that every consumer around the world should have the right to access communication tools and internet information. We operate our consumer business in over 100 countries and regions globally, while strictly complying with local laws and regulations.
We strongly oppose the inclusion of Xiaomi in the “International sponsors of war” list by the Ukrainian National Anti-Corruption Bureau. We hope for world peace and never support war. Our mission is to persist in creating inspiring, affordable products that allow everyone around the world to enjoy a better life brought about by technology.
