Li Auto to Launch Full-size SUV Equipped with NVIDIA’s Latest Self-driving Chip Orin in 2022

Leading domestic EV manufacturer Li Auto signed a tripartite strategic cooperation agreement today with NVIDIA, the world’s leading artificial intelligence computing company, and NVIDIA’s Chinese partner Desay SV in Beijing.

After this cooperation, Li Auto will be the first to use the NVIDIA Orin system-on-chip in its next model, a full-size extended-range smart SUV, to be launched in 2022.

NVIDIA’s chief executive and co-founder Jensen Huang also revealed in a video introduction that Li Auto will become the first domestic car manufacturer equipped with Orin series chips.

According to Rishi Dhall, the global vice president of NVIDIA’s automotive business, the NVIDIA Orin system-on-chip selected by Li Auto was released in 2019.

He added that it is also an in-vehicle chip that NVIDIA has invested billions of dollars in four years to build. It has achieved great improvement in computing performance and energy efficiency with its single-chip computing capacity reaching 200 TOPS per second (200 trillion operations per second), 7 times that of the previous generation Xavier system-on-chip.

Based on this hardware system, Li Auto will achieve up to Level 4 automatic driving functions, and provide end-users with upgradeable solutions for software and hardware, and the entire vehicle’s computing power can be extended to 2,000 TOPS. With a huge increase in computing performance, Orin’s power consumption is only 45 watts, which is consistent with the previous generation.

Li Auto will also provide end-users with an upgradeable solution. The standard single-chip Orin can have 200 TOPS computing power and can provide Level 2+ advanced driving assistance functions.

After upgrading to dual-chip Orin, the computing power reaches 400 TOPS, which can provide a Level 4 autonomous driving scheme. In the future, the use of dGPU can further expand the computing power, theoretically up to 2,000 TOPS, and reserve sufficient hardware capabilities to realize Level 5 autonomous driving.

Based on the calculations of the Orin system-level chip, Desay SV will provide an autonomous driving domain controller for Li Auto. Ideally, all autonomous driving programming and algorithm logic settings will be completed independently on this basis.

Wang Kai, Chief Technology Officer of Li Auto, said he looks forward to the cooperation among Li Auto, NVIDIA, and Desay SV to bring users a safer and more convenient autonomous driving experience.

“As a new force in car manufacturing, Li Auto will invest more research and development resources in the field of autonomous driving. We are the first to use NVIDIA’s latest generation of Orin autonomous driving chips so that Li Auto can establish a good hardware foundation, and the cooperation with NVIDIA and Desay SV will help Li Auto develop faster in the field of autonomous driving.”
