JD.com Releases 2021 ESG Report

Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com released its “Environment, Society and Governance Report 2021” on Tuesday, outlining the company’s progress last year in the areas of developing green supply chains, boosting the real economy, promoting high-quality consumption and social efficiency, and more.

Supporting farmers and agricultural development is a high priority on JD.com’s agenda. The report shows that to date, JD.com has provided job opportunities to more than 300,000 frontline workers, with over 80 percent coming from rural areas.

The ESG report revealed that JD.com has completed the installation of photovoltaic power generation systems in the first batch of 12 intelligent industrial parks, and it has delivered 20,000 new energy logistics vehicles in more than 50 cities across the country. Specifically, JD.com’s Xi’an Asia No.1 Logistics Industrial Park was certified as China’s first carbon-neutral logistics park.

In terms of promoting the innovation of carbon reduction technology, JD Logistics carried out a pilot project of recycling packaging in the city of Haikou last year. As of the end of 2021, the Green Stream Initiative had driven China’s e-commerce logistics sector to reduce the use of nearly 10 billion disposable packages, replaced with reusable delivery boxes made of 100 percent recyclable materials that have so far been used 200 million times.

In 2021, JD.com provided sufficient supply of daily materials using its own supply chain and technical capabilities in many Chinese cities affected by the pandemic, and it invested in many unmanned intelligent express vehicles.

In October 2020, JD.com proposed the promotion of rural revitalization. By the end of 2021, it had generated 32 million yuan ($4.8 million) in production value and increased income for millions of farmers.
