Huawei Smartphone Shipments Grow 66% Year-on-Year in the Third Quarter of 2019

According to data from global technology market analysis firm Canalys, total shipments of Huawei smartphones have grown by 66% year-on-year, with a market share of 42.4% in the third quarter. This is yet another double-digit growth for Huawei for the sixth consecutive quarter against the backdrop of a gloomy Chinese market.

“Huawei opened a huge gap between itself and other vendors. It has 25% more share than this quarter’s runner-up, Vivo,” said Nicole Peng, one of Canalys’ VP. “Its dominant position gives Huawei a lot of power to negotiate with the supply chain and to increase its wallet share within channel partners.”

Canalys data shows that in the third quarter of 2019, China’s smartphone market shipments were 9.7 million units in total, a general decline of 3%, among which Huawei’s shipments reached 41.5 million. The shipments of Vivo, OPPO, Xiaomi and Apple were 17.5 million, 17 million, 8.8 million and 5.1 million, respectively, rounding out the top 5. The shipments of iPhones reached a five year low in this quarter.

In the report, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Apple accounted for a total 50% market share, down 14% from 64% in the same period last year. Among them, Xiaomi‘s market share dropped the most, with a decline of 33%.

However, in the European market, Xiaomi, Samsung and other manufacturers have also grabbed significant market share from Huawei. Not long ago, at a Xiaomi launch event, Lei Jun said that Xiaomi’s smartphone shipments inQ2 in Western Europe increased by 53.2% year-on-year.
