Huawei Launches Second Generation Foldable Smartphone Mate Xs

Shenzhen-based telecom giant Huawei launched their second ever foldable device. The Mate Xs is a next generation version of the groundbreaking Mate X presented at MWC 2019 in Barcelona. Foldable display technology has been embraced by competitors like Samsung as a way to innovate and differentiate their products.

The Mate Xs is faster than its predecessor, equipped with a Kirin 990 processor supporting 5G. Huawei has also claimed to have re-engineered the hinge function to be smoother and more durable. Remaining consistent with the Mate X, the Mate Xs unfolds to 8 inches, while the main display measures 6.6 inches when folded. The new Mate Xs will also feature a 4,500mAh battery like its predecessor.

The camera hardware includes a main 40-megapixel f/1.8 camera, an 8-megapixel f/2.4 telephoto camera, a 16-megapixel f/2.2 ultrawide camera, and a 3D depth-sensing camera.

For software, the Mate Xs can display up to three apps at the same time when unfolded, by showing an app on each half and a floating window. Also, given Huawei’s blacklisting by the US government last summer, the new device will not have access to Google Mobile Services, instead functioning using in-house developed Huawei Mobile Services.

The Mate Xs sits at the extreme of the premium segment, priced around $2700 for the model with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of onboard storage.
