The Chengdu Municipal Government signed a strategic cooperation framework on July 30 with domestic battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL), aimed at promoting the joint implementation of major local projects.
According to the agreement, CATL will set up a Southwest Operations Headquarters and Chengdu Research Institute, focusing on new energy development and utilization, power batteries, new energy storage and other fields. At the same time, the two sides will focus on all-round cooperation in the fields of power exchange infrastructure construction, comprehensive utilization of resources, manufacturing of key battery materials, new energy and energy storage.
This is not the first time that Chengdu has joined hands with CATL. In February last year, CATL built a lithium-ion battery production base project in the city’s Xinjin District, and deployed five lithium-ion battery production lines and more than 400 pieces of advanced lithium-ion battery production equipment to build an intelligent unmanned factory.
According to the latest report by Seoul-based SNE Research, from January to May 2022, CATL remained the world’s biggest EV battery maker with a market share of 33.9%, and its total battery loading was 53.3 GWh, up 112.1% year-on-year.
Each CATL production line can produce 150 battery cells in one minute, and more than 1.4 million battery cells are achieved every day. Once Chengdu Xinjin’s production base, which is located in the Xinjin Tianfu Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park, enters production, 100,000 new energy vehicles can be equipped, based on the calculation of 100 kWh per vehicle.
The construction and commissioning of the CATL project has strengthened the new energy vehicle industry in the Tianfu Intelligent Manufacturing Industrial Park. So far, new energy enterprises such as GREE Altairnano New Energy, Zhongshan Broad-Ocean Motor, Sinoma Science & Technology and Qingcheshulu Hydrogen Motor have been gathered in the location.
